City Capers features a variety of exhibit components, including the ShopRite Supermarket, Busy Build, Front Step (toddler area), Pat’s Shoe Store, CHOP Medical Center, and Captain Noah set.
Here are a few sample exhibit goals and educational objectives related to specific exhibit components that educators can take advantage of:
ShopRite Supermarket:
Exhibit Goal: Encourage healthy choices, social skills, physical activity, good nutrition, and foster environmental stewardship.
Educational Objectives:
- Broad Focal Experience: Social science, science, math
- Specific Learning Concepts: Matching, menu planning, ingredient selection, money identification, counting, color/shape identification, social skills, manners, coordination, listening skills, food identification, demonstrate flexibility and responsibility, develop social interactions
- Learning Modality as it relates to Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences: Visual Spatial, Verbal Linguistic, Mathematical Logical, Intrapersonal
In-museum and classroom activities associated with ShopRite Supermarket:
- Read: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
- Classroom: Paint with different types of food, make an abstract collage with pictures of food, illustrate healthy meals and menus.
- Create a kitchen concert with objects found in the supermarket and kitchen.
- Pretend Play: Clerk, bagger, shopper, baker, stock clerk, merchant, manager, parent, etc.
CHOP Medical Center:
Exhibit Goal: Help students understand their bodies, doctors and doctor’s offices by playing in the medical center.
Educational Objectives:
- Broad Focal Experience: Science, math, social studies
- Specific Learning Concepts: Role play, leadership, confronting fear about the doctor, money exchange, responsibility, develop self concept, refine and understand feelings and their body, develop self- care and self reliance, engage in healthy and safe play, concepts of health, healthful living, safety and injury prevention

- Read: Busy, Busy Town by Richard Scarry
- Pretend Play: Office manager, doctor, nurse, patient, parent, receptionist, medical professional, veterinarian, etc.
